Church; Open Arms, or Pointed Fingers?

“And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax

collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” And when

Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those

who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”” Mark 2:16-17 ESV

This is kind of a picture of what church is all to often like versus what it should be like. The

Pharisees are like the church folks who monitor who is allowed to attend church to make sure

the riff-raff don't contaminate us good church folks. It's kind of like the article I just read about

the church where the deacons were monitoring the women in the church for improper dress

length; one of the deacons went so far as to video a women who he felt was wearing a too short

skirt so he would have evidence for the disciplinary meeting he would hold. What I believe

Jesus actually wanted the church to be was a place where sinners were free to enter so that

they might be available to hear the truth of the gospel!

We don't want the church to be a place where sinners enter in and feel no conviction, but we do

want it to be a place they will enter. Jesus set the example we ought to follow, he spoke to,

touched and loved the lost and broken and invited them to come hear the good news, we should

do no less
