God is a Consuming Fire

Hebrews 12:29 ESV “for our God is a consuming fire.”

I’ve been watching the reports of the massive fires burning in California. Reports by experienced firefighters say that it is the worst wildfires they have ever seen. Families who have barely escaped with their lives say that the fires escalated from a warning to a mandatory evacuation in a matter of minutes. One woman talked of driving away from her home with walls of fire on both sides of the road while the fire department was trying to provide cover by spraying water. It caused me to think of the passages in the Bible that refer to God as a consuming fire.

As scary as the wildfires are, they are only a type and shadow of the consuming fire of God that will be poured out on the unholy, and those who deny Him. He has offered invitation after invitation, warning after warning. He desires that all would be saved, but the time will come when every knee will bow before Him. Some will see the effects of the consuming fire and fall to their knees in praise to the one who saved their souls; others will fall to their knees and cry out “Oh, No! I never thought it was true.” Where will you be found when the consuming fire of God is released?
